October Book Gossip

Check out these words of wisdom from book clubs:

Dracula by Bram Stoker. Submitted by the Prairie Village Reading Club of Prairie Village KS
Rating: 4 specs (out of 5).
Description: Classic story of horror and suspense.
Comments: Every book club needs to read this one. The discussion was great! It's an October/Halloween "staple."

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Submitted by Mary and Friends Book Club, Shawnee KS
Rating: 4 specs (out of 5)
Description: A subtle, psychological thriller that has earned its place as one of the significant haunted house stories of the ages.
Comments: This is a great classic horror story. It was perfect for Halloween!

The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. Submitted by MPBC, Lawrence KS
Rating: None provided
Description: The true story of a serial killer who stalked lovers lanes in the Italian countryside.
Comments: We gave the book a "medium" rating (not fantastic, but not horrible either.) It did provoke a great discussion about the differences between the Italian and American justice systems.

Run by Anne Patchett. Submitted by the Patsy Anne Book Club, Lawrence KS
Rating: 4 specs (out of 5)
Description: Anne Patchett's fifth novel. The Washington Post describes it as a "thoroughly intelligent book, an intimate domestic drama that deals with big issues touching us all: religion, race, class, politics, and above all else, family."
Comments: We gave Run a four out of five rating. The ending was a little abrupt, but we have enjoyed reading everything by this author.

Straight Man by Richard Russo. Submitted by the Spring Hill Book Club, Spring Hill KS
Rating: None provided
Description: A humorous novel with a serious side, Straight Man explores the lives of those who inhabit academe.
Comments: We were split with our opinion of this book. Half of our book club's members really liked Straight Man and the other half didn't like it at all.

Surveillance by Jonathan Raban. Submitted by the Tuesday Evening Book Discussion Group, Geneva IL.
Rating: 4 specs (out of 5)
Description: Raban explores the current political climate in this novel set in a near future Seattle.
Comments: Anticipated some political sniping, but instead, was pleasantly surprised by a measured, thoughtful discussion. The ending is controversial - my group generally liked it, but many other reviewers (especially Amazon reviewers) were less than satisfied. The book provided the opportunity for an excellent discussion.
